Designer Tanja Hellmuth explains what really matters when it comes to sustainable fashion and the perfect dress.

    Can you please introduce yourself?
I am Tanja Hellmuth, founder and owner of hellmuth.TANJA HELLMUTH STUDIOS, an Ethical Luxury Fashion Label by a woman for women.

    Tanja Hellmuth

Tanja Hellmuth, the Designer and Founder of Hellmuth.

Why do you do what you do?
Out of a passion for fashion and beautiful things. I am convinced that we can achieve something positive together with and through sustainable, beautiful products.

How does the perfect dress for every day look like?
It makes you feel good and lets you be yourself. It accompanies you through the whole day and, depending on your styling, fits into relaxed shopping, into the office or even into the bar in the evening.

Have you got any styling advice for dresses?
With the rights sneakers, it looks casual and modern. This way you can get through the day comfortably and stylish at the same time.

Since when have you been dealing with the topic of sustainability in fashion?
I've been actively involved in sustainability for about 5 years now. During my last job at hessnatur, the largest textile full-range supplier and pioneer of ecologically and fairly produced textiles, I was able to acquire a lot of know-how the last 3 years. I have the greatest respect for all those who emphatically deal with this complex topic.

Was there a personal trigger for your interest?
On the one hand, there is my own growing need to know where a product comes from and what it consists of. On the other hand, the increased horror reporting about the problems in the fashion industry also influenced me.

How has your lifestyle changed since then?
I consume more consciously, I like to abandon things in order to treat myself to something good on the other hand, but only if I know where it comes from and how it was produced. Not only when it comes to food, but also when it comes to interiors - and of course fashion and accessories.
In addition, I try to change many small things in my life, for example "less plastic" in my day-to-day life. Unfortunately, I'm not quite able to do "no plastic" yet....

Do you think you can convince other people to buy and live more sustainably?
I am absolutely convinced that we are able to motivate many people to live more sustainably. Important are concepts that reflect modernity and zeitgeist, but which also emphasise sustainability in their realization.

The need of people to consume responsibly is there and is becoming more and more pronounced. However, the products must also fit the people's lifestyle.

What expectations do you have for the future regarding the fashion industry and its consumers?
I would like the fashion industry to be more cooperative. When we join forces, we have the power to influence the pre-stages of production, for example, fabric suppliers and producers to change their product ranges. The preservation of ecological and social criteria should become self-evident! I would like to see a change from the consumer towards a more targeted, conscious consumption.

It's better to buy an item less but instead consciously buy the next one. It is quite clear: quality as well as ecological and social know-how are not available at dumping prices!

Are there any sustainable hotspots that you would like to recommend to our readers?
Everyone should takes a look at the local neighborhood to see what concepts can be found there. I think it's important to integrate sustainability into our everyday lives. When I travel, I also like to go to restaurants with organic cuisine. But as I said: When you think local you act global!
