• WHY WE DO, WHAT WE DO - KODZIA & MELODIE, THE FOUNDERS OF HOUSE VON EDEN

    Haus von Eden

We talked to Kodzia and Melodie, the founders of House von Eden. A design & lifestyle platform for sustainable luxury.

WHY DO YOU DO WHAT YOU DO?
We want to detach sustainability from its dusty eco-image. It should rather make people want to live more consciously and be associated with sexiness. Sustainability is not a trend, it is the foundation of today's and tomorrow's zeitgeist. We build Haus von Eden to create a desirable lifestyle that combines aesthetics & design with ethics & fairness.

The X-Chair is a radical design by Hermann August Weizenegger for the collection of objects of our day (OUT). Entirely made from recycled material, produced locally and with a return program for return to the production cycle.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DEALING WITH THE TOPIC OF SUSTAINABILITY?
We were both raised very sustainable and down-to-earth. Our families never bought cheap and large quantities, but put great emphasis on quality and longevity. Among siblings we also shared everything and clothes were always passed on. Of course the fascination for fast fashion is big if you don't have much money at the age of 20 and always want to have beautiful things. We both know each other for 20 years now and at that time we didn't pay attention to what kind of materials the clothes are or under which conditions they were made. The older we got, the more the consumption madness became a disturbing factor. We live in a consumer society and this consumption can become an excess, in search of short moments of happiness and fulfillment. But exactly the opposite is the case: possession does not make you happy.
That was the key moment when we started to question many things and wanted to change our lives. Since then, life has gained much more quality. To live more consciously and sustainably does not mean to renounce, but one gains self-confidence and freedom.

Left: Form & Refine represents the new generation of interior brands. The Danish company combines carefully selected materials and traditional craftsmanship with modern Nordic design. Right: Room spray from Auli. Their focus lays on functionality, aesthetics and carefully selected, natural resources which are free of harmful substances.

WHAT HAS CHANGED IN YOUR LIFESTYLE SINCE THEN?
We only buy things that we really need and avoid spontaneous purchases. Things that last for a long time and don't quickly run out of fashion. That means making a conscious choice, with anticipation and attention to detail. We deal intensively with the values behind the brands we consume. Second-hand and vintage platforms are also great options to treat yourself to something special and timeless that can even increase in value over time. With a classic designer piece, you can never go wrong. This applies to fashion as well as interior design. We are also not perfect in everyday life, but of course we try as much as possible to protect the environment, e.g. avoiding plastic, walking and cycling etc.

DO YOU THINK YOU CAN CONVINCE OTHER PEOPLE TO BUY AND LIVE MORE SUSTAINABLY?
Yes definitely! The most important thing for us is not to be too strict and to always be true to ourselves. With House von Eden we want to inspire people. We do not believe in extreme renunciation, which can lead to losing joy and giving up quickly. Restrictions and prohibitions are not the right educational method even for children, why should it work for us adults?

In line with the circular economy, ecoBirdy manufactures designer furniture for children from old toys. The sustainable design objects are environmentally and health-friendly, 100% made from recycled plastic and, conversely, recyclable.

WHAT WOULD YOU HOPE FOR IN THE FUTURE, FROM THE FASHION INDUSTRY AND THE CONSUMERS?
From the fashion industry: That they bring out fewer collections a year and offer better quality, with a reasonable price and timeless design. Of course, it is very important that they maintain fair conditions for production worldwide and, above all, that they create more transparency in production processes with the help of digitization.
From the consumers: That they get away from the cheap! Everything in life has a price, and when buying a T-shirt, everybody should ask themselves, whether the material, production, quality and transport can really match the price? Another important point is that the consumer should change his mindset regarding the frequency of consumption and buy more consciously, so that these mountains of fast fast-fashion trash finally belong to the past.
